Plant Meter: App Concept

A prompt I saw a while ago was to create a "product of the future" that's practical and has an app to accompany it. The more I thought about it, the more ideas I had and eventually came to this one.

Plant Meter is a meter-app duo that allows people to keep track of their plant's health. The meter is a metal stick with a screen on the top in the shape of a leaf. Ideally, one package would come with 3 meters and allow the user to move their meters across different plants. The meter is simply placed in the plant's pot and can identify an approximation of the plant species and based on the identification, can determine a plant's health vitals, including levels of sunlight, air temperature, and others. The meter itself only displays three vitals of which can be customized in the Plant Meter app.

The Plant Meter app displays a user's list of plants that they've registered with the plant meter and allows for customization of the meters themselves. It displays the full list of vitals that the plant has and alerts the user when one or more vitals are in critical condition.

Using Figma for designing and interactive prototype elements, I was able to come up with a product that I would personally use all the time as someone who has a hard time figuring out why my plants keep dying (hahaha).

"The issue I have with plant management apps is that I can't tell what's actually wrong with my plant."

I talked to some people who are all plant lovers to come up with some key issues that I attempt to solve with Plant Meter. The main feedback I received was that although plant management apps are helpful for reminders, they don't help the user figure out why exactly their plants are dying. Some other feedback included that the better features were behind a paywall, and that if the plant moved, the app didn't account for how the change would affect the plant's health.

I looked at competitor apps and realized that a lot of information provided to the user would be removed completely or simplified with the use of a physical meter. The use of a plant meter in purchasable "packs" also accounts for cost and for the possibility of new versions of the Plant Meter.

My Solution

I would love to see Plant Meter brought to life one day. I think it would benefit a lot of beginner plant parents and help more intermediate plant parents maintain the health of their plants.
